Rope is defined as an "assemblage of fibres, filaments, or wires compacted by twisting or braiding (plaiting) into a long, flexible line." Rope is also called cable or cord.

People have been using ropes for thousands of years, as seen by fragments and the impressions on clay pots. The first ropes were probably made of plant fibers, such as vines, which were twisted together to increase their strength. Today, ropes are still made from plants such as cotton and hemp, in addition to metals and man-made materials.

Rope is often representative of rural, rustic, or country-western culture, since ropes are used in farming applications. Many people think of the cowboy's lasso. Ropes also represent nautical culture, because of their presence in the riggings of ships and complex knots. Rope can also be a symbol of bondage, captivity, or slavery. For example, ancient Egyptian statues depict forced laborers bound with ropes at the wrist.
